After two sold-out engagements in Los Angeles, the stage show based on the 1999 film will get a pop-up run at (Le) Poisson Rouge. Cruel Intentions: The Musical is heading to New York City.
The stage adaptation of the 1999 cult hit film — which enjoyed two sold-out engagements in Los Angeles — will make its New York premiere with a pop-up run at (Le) Poisson Rouge. Spanning only three dates, the show will be performed Feb. 11, 13 and 14.
The immersively staged musical features pop and rock hits of the ’90s and songs from the film’s soundtrack. It first debuted at the Rockwell Table & Stage in L.A. in 2015, and was remounted at the Prospect Theatre the following year. During both runs, the show featured a rotating cast — including Faking It‘s Katie Stevens and Pretty Little Liars’ Janel Parrish, among others — and was visited by the film’s stars, Ryan Philippe, Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair (with the latter two re-creating their iconic kiss).
Jordan Ross and Lindsey Rosin, who developed the musical, tell The Hollywood Reporter that they hope the pop-up serves as the show’s introduction to NYC, to then be followed by a longer, fully mounted run at an Off-Broadway venue in the future. The New York dates will include a “bigger sound” (via Zach Spound’s music direction and arrangements), plus a cast of new NYC actors with returning L.A. faces from the previous runs.
“The idea was always to head to New York — it’s like bringing Kathryn and Sebastian back home,” said Ross of the memorable Manhattan-based characters. “We hope this is a starting point for a bright future for the show.” Added Rosin: “We thought Valentine’s Day would be a great time to go to New York and break a couple hearts. Hopefully in the coming months and in the future, we can mount a full production in New York.”
A modern retelling of the classic 1782 French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, the Roger Kumble-directed Cruel Intentions film followed two gorgeously despicable step-siblings who set their sights on a sexual conquest: the daughter of the new headmaster at their Manhattan prep school. The Columbia release also starred Joshua Jackson, Eric Mabius, Sean Patrick Thomas and Christine Baranski.
